Umpire Training:

Proper PRE-GAME with Partners ( for use w/ 2-man or 3-man)

Pre Game topics with partners

• Run rule

• Tie-breaker

• Fly ball coverage/ going out

– Divide field 50/50 with no runners on; 1B umpire has right of first refusal

– Divide field 25/50/25 with runners on, rotated umpire has the 50

• Fair/foul coverage:

– Give plate umpire the first opportunity to make the call in the plate area

– Plate umpire has responsibility for fair/foul through the base

• Leadoff / tag up responsibilities:

– Watch the runner primarily, the pitcher peripherally

• Tag up responsibilities

( if U1 goes out )  with runners on 1st or none

• Check swings:

– Must go for help if asked by the catcher/ coach

– Go to the open side umpire, even if the umpire is rotated

• Between play coverage:

– Hold your positions until the ball is in the circle and all runners are on a base

– Plate holds and views as umpires change positions

• Between inning mechanics

– Base umpires position-in grass, 10-15 feet from the line, fronting the plate

– Plate umpire is 8-10 feet from the plate, opposite the team coming to bat

– Pitcher’s plate is swept, only if needed, using the following priority system:

1. The remaining umpire on the infield;

2. The umpire who ends the inning in the middle of the diamond;

3. If both umpires end the inning on the line 3B umpire?

• Unusual situations (interference, obstruction, line drives/ short hops on infield)

– Strong “Dead Ball” verbal and signal on interference

– Signal obstruction immediately using delayed dead ball signal

– Signal no obstruction/interference/infraction using safe signal when needed

– Usually the responsibility of the umpire who has the play coming at them; discuss

exceptions

– Discuss tag plays between home and first base

• Going for help

– Discuss situations when you must go for help when requested (check swing, pickoff

plays)

– Discuss situations when you should go for help (you are missing a piece of information; you have doubt; doubt is created)

– How (ask outright or come together)

• Umpire communication – verbalize “2-man”, “ I got 3rd

– Communicate during rotation

– Communicate when going out

– Umpire to umpire signals

• Confrontations

– Keep it one-on-one

– Role of non-involved umpire

– When to intervene

• Exiting the field

Appeal plays are:

• Participation by an improper player

• Missing a base

• Leaving a base on a caught fly ball before the ball is first touched

• Attempting to advance to second base after overrunning first base

• Switching base runners on occupied bases

• Batting out of order

• Submitting an inaccurate line-up card
